Payday super 2026: what it means for your workshop

From 1 July 2026, super pays out with wages. Seven business days to land in the fund, every pay run, every employee.

From 1 July 2026, every Australian employer has to pay super at the same time as wages. Every pay run. Contributions have to reach the employee's fund within seven business days of payday. It replaces the quarterly window that has been the rule for decades.

Why it changed

Unpaid and late super has been the largest single gap in employee entitlements for years. Paying with wages removes the delay. The ATO can now see a late payment inside a pay cycle instead of at the end of a quarter.

What breaks if super is late

Late super triggers the Super Guarantee Charge. That's the unpaid amount, an interest component, and administrative penalties. Under the new model the ATO gets faster visibility, and acts on it faster too.

The Small Business Superannuation Clearing House

The ATO's free clearing house closes on 1 July 2026. Small businesses using it will need an alternative payment route before that date. Any modern payroll system with a SuperStream gateway does the same job.

What this means for a tyre or mechanical workshop

  • Cash outflow is more frequent. Super no longer sits in your account for months, so cash planning shifts up a cycle.
  • Payroll accuracy matters more. A miscoded hour is a miscoded super batch, and it goes out the door the same week.
  • Employee data hygiene matters more. Wrong USI, wrong fund, late contribution.
